SENIOR CUP REPORT: Ill-Discipline Causes Castletroy to Collapse in Senior Cup

Paul Hurley reports from Bandon RFC

Bandon comeback to defeat Castletroy down in Cork in Senior Cup.

The match began at a very quick tempo and possession was split for the first few minutes. Castletroy took the lead through a fantastic 50 meter try from Paul Clancy under the posts. Bandon had an opportunity to get 3 back but missed the resulting penalty. Castletroy came under heavy pressure and the ref brandished his first yellow of the game to Castletroy second-row Graham Bourke. Bandon took full advantage of this and Colin Deane scored a try in the corner. They missed the resulting conversion.

Castletroy moved straight back on the offensive after this and a bootless Paul Clancy was able to break through the Bandon defense yet again for a try. Conversion was made by Stephen Atkinson.

Half-Time Score: Bandon 7-14 Castletroy.

Castletroy received an early penalty in the second half and Atkinson converted to extend their lead to 17-7. This is where Castletroy’s discipline began to deteriorate as Bandon piled on pressure. Castletroy Captain Sean English received Castletroy’s second yellow after conceding numerous penalties. Castletroy held out for a few more minutes before being reduced to 13 men as Barry Richardson received a yellow.

With this huge numbers advantage Bandon ran in for an easy try in the corner from Robin Stokes. They missed the conversion but were straight back on the attack after kick-off. They piled on more pressure against a 14 man Castletroy and Bandon’s hooker Travis Coomey ran over for Bandon’s second try in quick succession and made the conversion to take the lead. Castletroy were brought back to their full compliment but fatigue showed and Bandon were able to finish with a flourish and score a try by Evan Palmer.

Final Score: Bandon 24-17 Castletroy College.
